Threats and intimidations
At the University of Iceland, common courtesy applies, meaning that people treat others as they themselves wish to be treated.
- Stay calm and project confidence, even if you do not feel that way.
- Speak quietly and in a monotone voice.
- Do not become defensive. Do not respond to accusations or insults, under any circumstances.
- Speak with courtesy, understanding, and respect.
- Do not try to argue or persuade.
- Do not guess how the person is feeling, and do not try to interpret their situation.
- Try to appeal to reason. Do not say, “How are you feeling?” Instead, say, “Help me understand"
- Refer to the institution’s rules, but do not personalize them by saying “we” or “I.”
- If you are unable to calm the situation, seek assistance.
- Speak to the nearest colleague.
- Stand up and seek help in the nearest room or area.
- Call for assistance through the owl heart if that is available.
If the threat is such that police assistance is needed, call 112 immediately.
All incidents must be reported to the University of Iceland Safety Committee on the same page used for reporting accidents and incidents.
